Windrow compost

So I’m trying my hand at windrow composting since I can’t haul my manure out to the field.  The temperatures have been in the 60s and everything is wet and saturated.   Johnny attended a few compost workshops and I did a little internet research. Hopefully it doesn’t get too wet and stinky, and the temperature gets just right to then turn it later on.

Sometimes farming is like walking in the dark. I guess I am walking in the dark a lot lately.

I just artificially inseminated my very first gilt tonight! I am so pumped! She stood for me until the catheter was in then she wanted to lay down. As I inserted it in more, I could feel her body just totally relax and let down. I could visually see the semen being sucked in with every clench of her cervix. It was soooo cool! I probably took the catheter out a little too early because Red, another gilt, was smelling around there and trying to chew on it while Polka was relaxed. I sure hope I did it right and inserted it in the right place. I am supposed to service her again tomorrow morning and tomorrow night.

If this is successful, I am totally going to scream with glee! Farming is so awesome. In what other occupation do you get to do this?!?!
