We were finishing up our 2011 soybean harvest tonight and it started to sprinkle rain. For the past few weeks it has felt like Bakersfield, California (a city in the desert between L.A and Las Vegas). We finally got a little bit of rain and everything changed! The air became clear and fresh, the skies opened up, the ground got to drink, and a giant rainbow appeared! It was lovely!

A dusty soybean harvest

This past week has been nothing but dry, drier and more dry. Soybeans were actually becoming too dry, believe it our not. This is an example of what we were dealing with while combining our 2011 soybean crop. With winds up to 40 mph and 80+ degree temperatures, there was nothing we could do but work through it. We will have lost quite a bit of bushel weight on this years soybean crop.

Remember the Peanuts character Pig Pen? Doesn’t this look like his dust and dirt cloud he walks around in?
